Climate Change ? Market & Technological Forces that will Impact the Professional Information Industry over the Next Five Years

13 juin 2007 - De 14h30 à 16h00
Salle : Salle Dürer
Plénière - Gratuit

Responsable de session : Harry COLLIER, Président, Infonortics

The theme of this session is that after a long period of stability in which the supply of professional information was dominated by a number of key publishers or suppliers, technology is enabling new market models to emerge. In many of these new models, the traditional information suppliers have a less important role.

The session opens (Harry Collier) with a brief survey of the classical models for professional
information, and then examines the potential impact of "the digital generation" and the new models and applications that are often called "Web 2.0", including the growing impact of collaboration and social networking in information provision.
The second speaker (Martin White) discusses the need for an organizational intranet to provide employees with access to both powerful enterprise search applications across wide range of internal information resources and also to services that deliver external news, company information and commercial intelligence. Technical and commercial issues will be considered.
The third speaker (Randall Marcinko) looks at the new business models for professional information delivery, with examples. Previously, the focus was on subscriptions or connection and print charges while new data businesses are increasingly able to take advantage of Web 2.0 technology to dramatically lower overhead, often allowing content to be free to the end-user with the interposition of advertising and sponsorship. Web illumination and Search Engine Optimisation techniques can harvest vast numbers of end-users, critical to support new business models. The impact on traditional suppliers is considered.
